Programme

Our current programme is shown below.  Visitors can find up to date information here or on our Facebook page (if you “Like” the page you will receive updates as they are posted).

We have an ongoing programme  with a mixture of practical evenings, talks and demonstrations open to all plus a number of member only events such as outings and social activities. Unless otherwise stated we meet at Christ Church, High Street, Tonbridge with meetings beginning at 7.30 pm (door opens about 7pm) on the dates shown in the programme below. The meetings are held in the upstairs room but there is a lift available. Entry is via the rear door near Sainsbury’s car park which is now chargeable. Please note that for security purposes the door is locked at 7.30pm so please arrive before this time. The meetings usually run until about 9.30 pm with tea and coffee half way through the meeting.

Visitors are very welcome and the cost is £5 per visit with the first visit offered for free. All abilities are encouraged to come along and enjoy the evenings.

Historic Programme

2024

15th November – Workshop with Paul Gurney creating a portrait in watercolour using the zorn palette, red, black and yellow. Paul will provide a guided head for you to work from and take you through the painting process stage by stage.

1st November – Practical looking at the colour wheel and then creating your own picture using a limited palette, 2 maximum 3 colour’s. Again bring your own picture to work from. We created wonderful works from the colour wheel, which very interestingly is not as simple as it looks!

18th October – Presentation and practical creating a reflective piece of art work. Following on from Stuart, Linda gave a short presentation of various reflective art pictures mainly by modern artists we looked at and took inspiration from. We created our own pieces of work using various media,  Please see these lovely pieces of work on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

4th October – Talk and presentation by photography Stuart Mortimer. Stuart lives in Tonbridge and his work includes night time themes and reflections. A wonderful presentation from Stuart showing his influences that helped Stuart through Street Photography. Showing examples of his work with concepts and subjects. We had a wonderful evening, truly inspiring!

20th September –  Untutored practical in charcoal following on from John’s demo the session before. We had great fun with this medium, Some for the first time, these are showing on our Facebook page!

6th September –  Demo with John Woodberry, ‘everything charcoal’

28th June – Workshop with Tan Kingston. This is a chance for you to paint a plant pot on wood following on from Tans demo. Materials will be provided

12th July – Fish and chip supper night

14th June – Demonstration and talk on painting on wood with Tan Kingston. We had a lovely talk with Tan and she showed us different techniques for painting on wood, we are looking forward to trying this ourselves!

31st May – AGM

17th May – Practical in Pen and Wash untutored. We’ve produced some wonderful pictures and paintings using pens and washes. Check our Facebook page to see these!

19th April – Demonstration on watercolour techniques with John Woodberry

5th April – Workshop in oils with Michelle Constable. Michelle will take us through painting a cat in this medium on a small canvas. Canvases will be provided plus oils if you do not have any. We have both sorts in the art box, normal and water mixable and odourless solvent will be provided. We have produced wonderful pictures and paintings that can be seen on our Facebook Website!!

22nd March – Talk and presentation on American artists 19 mid 20 century

Friday 23rd February. Presentation and practical on the artist Patrick Caulfield. Please bring in a picture of an interior to copy. Cauldfields work is very linear so you will need pencils a fine liner and paints to block colour. We had a lovely presentation given in the style and we have produced wonderful pictures and paintings that can be seen on our Facebook Website!!

Friday 9th February. Practice creating a picture in the style of S.J Peploe. You will need to bring along a picture of a landscape or building/s to copy and your art materials or use the paints in our cupboard. Gouache, acrylic/oil or pastel is probably a suitable medium for this practice. We had a wonderful evening painting in the style of S J Peploe, some people out of their comfort zones trying to think of colour and blocking, but we all created different pieces of work which you can find on our Facebook website!

Friday 26th January. Presentation and talk on 4 Scottish Male artists from 1871-1999 by Linda Horne. This is a follow on from last year when we looked at the 4 female Scottish from the same era – Linda gave a wonderful talk on the following artists: William Crosbie – 1915-1999, Alberto Morrocco – !917-1998, James Cowie – 1886-1956 and Samuel J Peploe.

2023

Friday 24 Nov.  Practical creating a stained glass window with tissue paper. Materials will be provided.  We had a lot of fun creating our stained glass windows. Creative ideas and colourful designs were made, please see our websites for the photos!

Friday 10 Nov.  Painting still life. This is a follow on from the previous session. There will be two still life’s set up and you can paint either one in any medium you wish. Please bring your own materials. You are welcome to use our supply of acrylics if you wish and there are brushes and paper in the cupboard for use if need be. No drawing with pencil this time just paint. We had great fun, our pictures are on Facebook for all to see!

Friday 27 Oct.  Presentation and practical on modern still life.  We first had a talk and show on five different artists giving examples of still life, Gloria Dietz Kiberon, Catherine J Martzloff, Jo Sharp, Jo Hall and Roy Lichenstein. This gave us inspiration for our own practical of sketching and painting our own items that we had brought in for our own modern life. Of course we have placed these on our Facebook and Instagram page for you to view!

13th October 2023 – Demonstration by artist Michelle Constable on painting a dog portrait in oils. In the meeting Michelle painted a wonderful piece of work using oils, we couldn’t believe in the short space of time how she manged to create a wonderful work of art!

29th September – Practical, exploring different ways of painting with acrylics. A wonderful evening of painting with acrylics using different methods and tools for painting. Lots of examples on our Facebook Page

15th September 2023 – Presentation by Linda Looking at the lives and works of 4 Scottish women artists from the mid 19/20 centuries – We had a wonderful and interesting talk from Linda with examples of works from 4 Scottish artists, Frances MacDonald, Norah Nelson Gray, Anne Redpath and Joan Eardly, a mixture of views and comments given!

Friday 7th July  Printing workshop with Veronica Hayes. Exploring mono    printing with oil pastilles, ink and poly block printing. What a wonderful last meeting before the summer break! Some wonderful examples are shown on our websites. More to come with meetings and some days out, so keep checking for updates!

Friday  23rd June. Paint something that’s local to you. A scene, an object, a doorway etc. We have some wonderful paintings and drawings of what we all have local to us, check the Instagram and Facebook pages to see!

Friday  9th June.  Design your initial in the style of a Medieval Manuscript. We had some fun designing our own initials using all sorts of medium. Please see our Facebook and Instagram Pages for a look at the wonderful art work people have created.

Friday 26th May.        AGM. New President and Treasurer have been elected, welcome to John Woodberry and Amelia Parsons. Congratulations to the winner of My Favourite Things competition, which you can see on our Facebook website and our new Instagram Page

Friday 12th May.         Tonal Still Life with Paul Gurney. Practical. A lovely evening with a practical way of drawing, sketching and painting still life, being given direction from Paul. Our pictures are on Facebook!

Friday 28th April.       Mounting and Framing pictures with John Woodberry.

Friday 14th April.        Celtic Knots, practical with David Hazeldean. A wonderful evening learning how to draw and sketch Celtic knots, wonder pictures on our Facebook page!

Friday 31st March.     Fish and Chip supper Night.  We had a lovely evening, with a quiz

Friday 17th March.     Workshop in oils, untutored. We all had a wonderful time painting in oils. Some people had not used this medium before and are now converted. Our paintings are on Facebook, please see what we all achieved!!

Friday 3rd March.      Colour and Composition in Oils, Demo with Tan Kingston. A wonderful demonstration of colour and techniques, please catch Tan’s demo paintings on our Facebook page

Friday 17th February.  Mixed Media workshop with Josie Tipler. Unfortunately Josie couldn’t make it to our meeting, but we had great fun creating our own pictures using mixed media. Check our Facebook page to see.

Friday 3rd February.  Mixed Media Demo with Josie Tipler.  A wonderful example of mixed media Josie completed is now on the Facebook page!

Friday 20th January.   Drawing portraits with Paul Gurney. Have a look on our Facebook Page for the pictures we drew!

Friday 6th January.   Create a winter scene in any medium. Untutored. Pictures are now on our Facebook page!

Friday 25th November: Tessallations in Art led by Anne Blunt. Initial card shapes and full visual instructions will be provided.

Friday 11th November: Talk by Professional Artist Antonia Einthoven on her journey in art and her techniques with etching, printing and lino cutting.

Friday 28th October: Practical exploring the Zorn Palette

Friday 30th September. A tutorial and practical by Lynn Henry on book art .

Friday 16th September. A “Victorian snapshot” – a practical in the style of the postcards of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe.

Friday 15th July. Make a card using silk paints with Ann Howes and Pat Mitchell.

Friday 1st July. Demo/practical with Steve Everest.

Friday 17th June. Talk and presentation about the artist John Frederick Herring and his connections with Tonbridge given by Barbara Myatt.
